Bread ~ Daily Fare
Ah! The aroma of homemade bread and then nostalgia. Not many live in homes where bread is baked. Of course we cannot send you the aroma, but we do share our bread. Simple pleasures are life’s finest treasures, especially when tasting the bread surpasses the aroma!
The 16th century Saint Ignatius of Loyola wrote that bread was always to be available (probably referring to days of fasting). Savoring bread can be a ceremony - most bread lovers have one, depending on the favorite part of a slice. Years ago a guest quietly set aside a small portion of bread to be eaten last. Inquiry yielded the reason: “Bread saved my life during my 23 years of hard labor in Russian (Soviet) camps” [Father Walter Ciszek].
